Are Furnaces The Only Option For Heating A Home

Furnaces are used in homes and other dwellings to provide heat during colder weather. There are gas and electric versions, but even with a gas furnace, electricity is necessary for it to work. Coal and oil are also used to operate them. In the past ventilation was provided through the opening in a chimney. As the goal to become more energy efficient has come to the forefront, venting is done through a smaller opening.

Before choosing a furnace, consider the size needed based on the square footage of a space. Westinghouse, Amana and Rheem offer high efficiency models that will fit the size of any home. High efficiency models tend to cost a bit more than regular furnaces, but savings on utility bills is worth it as the difference in price will pay for itself year after year.

Usually the counterpart for a furnace is an air conditioner. Companies such as Bryant, Goodman and Trane sell furnaces, but also offer warmth through products such as a heat pump. They heat a space, but also provide cooling. They are often less costly than operating a furnace. However, a heat pump will cost more than an air conditioner used for just a short season. A heat pump may be suggested in areas where the temperature is moderate. One product that is an important part of certain heating and cooling systems are air handlers. An air handler makes a system work more efficiently by helping to circulate air.  The products chosen are often based on whether one wants heating or cooling only or a combination of warmth and air conditioning.

Installation is the first defense in making sure a furnace operates properly. It is also essential to keep toxic gases from leaking into a home. After years of use, one may notice their home is not being heated as efficiently as before. Any repair or heating and cooling maintenance should be provided by professionals. Check the warranty that comes with the product. If the furnace falls under warranty, a professional may come out at no charge for repairs. If the merchandise warranty is close to expiring, homeowners may consider having appliance insurance cover the item.
